I am Kahil. Originally from Australia, I moved to New York City in 2011 and have been making music here ever since. I’ve played in bands such as Regional de NY, Bonds, The Shaolin Afronauts & The Transatlantic, to name a few. After six years in NYC, I started writing music with my sister for our project Bonds; we recorded our first EP at the Avery Studio in Melbourne. Releasing music as Bonds inspired me to start making music under my own name in 2020. In 2022 released an album titled Lilac Friday. You can follow me on Instagram to keep up to date with what I'm up to.
Abaporu (2024) is written by Kahil Nayton and produced and recorded between Bunker Studio in Brooklyn, NY, Welterweight Sound in New Paltz, NY, and Wolf Studio in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Influenced heavily by Brazilian music and rhythms like samba, choro and forro, it also pulls from funk, soul and disco. The album features vocalists Inès Nassara and Jessica Assis (who also transcribed songs into Portuguese), and instrumentalists Joaquim José (trumpet), Antonio de Moraes Neves (trombone), Tomaz Retz (flute), Ben Hoffmann (keys), Ranjan Ramchandani (pandeiro & percussion), Jacob Bergson, Eduardo Belo (bass), Vitor Gonçalves (accordion), Bidu Campeche (percussion) and Chris St. Hilaire (drums).
Our band Regional de NY plays Brazilian choro around NYC, come hang! The band consists of Ranjan Ramchandani: Pandeiros; Vitor Goncalvez: Accordion; Eduardo Belo: Double Bass; Kahil Nayton: Cavaquinho; Cesar Garabini: 7 String Guitar.
